Is the Pharmaceutical jobs market changing

Pharmaceutical companies appear to be either buying other companies or being bought, but was is the impact on the pharmaceutical job market.

Whether you are in medical sales or regulatory affairs you can't have fialed to notice dramatic changes within the pharmaceutical market place. Over the last twelve months company after company has been bougt or marged to create fewer but larger companies.

The reasons are simple. The pharmaceutical industry has been squeezed from every direction, whether it be government enforced price cuts or restrictions on the sales of newly launched pharmaceutical products, the knock on effects can be seen in profits. Now, more than ever, the pharmaceutical shareholder is less prepared to wait for a medium or long term wait for gowth in profits, and consequently pharmaceutical companies must evolve to generate profits sooner, rather than later.

When two companies become one, it presents the enivitable opportunity to rationalise expenditures to increase profits. Unfortunately, one of the quickest ways to cut costs and increase profits is to reduce headcount numbers.

So what's the impact on the pharmaceutical jobs market. Well, firstly, there are less jobs in the industry than there were a year ago. However, there will always be a turnover of pharmaceutical sales and other pharmaceutical jobs. Medical representatives will always look to become sales managers, sales managers will always look to become National Sales Managers, and some will still leave the industry. Consequently, movement from job to job will still occur. The difference is the level of apprehension felt by job seekers and therefore an increased level of caution is visble.

I guess my best advice is not to be paralysed from seeking opportunities to progress, but simply to do as much research regarding your potential new company before making any final decisions.
