Training in Medical Sales

For Medical sales, all companies have an Initial Training course (ITC) or sometimes phrased and ITP ( 'p' for programme). The time involved with these course can vary hugely depending on many factors. In the worst case scenarios, training 'periods' upon entry can last up to 24 weeks. this may involve a mixture of Head office and field based work. In other scenarios, where a company has perhaps only recruited very experienced Medical reps, the ITC may only be a week.

Typical contents of an ITC would be

• Anatomy and physiology relating to the therapy areas your will be dealing with.
• The therapy areas themselves.
• Your own products and the competitors in your areas.
• Sales training
• Presentation training
• Organisation and planning skills training
• Company processes and procedures (Human resources)
• Resources training, computers, CRM systems and related departments such as medical information.
• Basic ABPI training (awareness of)

Throughout your time in Medical sales you are likely to come across a training course for every eventuality, such as selling to PCTs (primary care trusts), selling to D & Ts (Drugs and Therapeutic Committees in hospitals), dealing with awkward customers, team working, the list is endless.

Beyond Medical sales there are many directions in which you could choose to develop, product management, training, sales management, human resources, Medical information, clinical trials. In most companies, you will begin to follow a Personal development program (PDP) which is your route to develop your career. This can allow you to select training programs to attend which relate to your chosen career direction.
